I can see from your question that you’re pointing to Sony devices since they’re touchscreen e-Ink – however Sony has never been a contender for any comparisson by anyone as they only have very limited number books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Since I like Nook from Barnes & Noble too much, I’ll explain how it could work out for you on Nook.
Firstly, since you don’t care about color and web browsing, the only suggestion for you would be e-Ink Nook Wi-Fi. There is NOOK application for PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc. So you can have NOOK app for PC and you can search and download eBooks into your library from there. You can then (from your home with Wi-Fi or any Barnes & Noble store that provides free Wi-Fi to Nook’s or Starbucks, etc.) download the eBooks you got in your library to your Nook device.
One other advantage of Nook would be that when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store you’re allowed to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. I checked out Kindle Fire at BestBuy and got Nook Tablet instead – Nook is much better in my opinion, it’s like day and night in terms of device performance. A Kindle “location” is based on character count. Several sources say that a location represents 128 characters, although at least one site (booksprung) says that 122-125 characters is more accurate.

Either way, it tells you how far you are into a book in a way that doesn’t change when you change the font size or view the book on a device with a different sized screen.

The only way to use it to convert to pages would be to decide how may characters are on a “standard” page, and then covert the location to pages using that number. The answer would change based on the size of the page in the book and the size of the font used.

From what I understand, the Kindle uses Sprint’s cellular telephone network to deliver its content in the States. This cannot be used when travellig overseas. However, you can plug the Kindle to your computer via USB cable and download your purchases this way. You can do this through the Manage Your Kindle link on the Amazon site. This also means that if you wish to purchase anything while overseas, you would have to do it through your computer, as the wireless feature won’t work.

They are supposed to be identical. If abridged they must have a new ISBN. My novel, print version 2008, Kindle 2009, (Time for Patriots, a time travel adventure novel) is the same in both except the Kindle corrects a few typos, so the ISBNs are identical. If you can check the ISBN in a hard copy against the Kindle on a book you suspect is abridged, if they are the same number, they cannot have been changed.

Incidently, I’m not sure why someone would suggest another ebook reader because the Kindle has too long of a battery life. Very curious.
